The four ballades of Chopin, more than the somewhat inaccurately named piano sonatas, are the composer's most complex works, both structurally and emotionally, and performances of them differ in substantial ways.
Leif Ove Andsnes’ last release of rare Sibelius piano works was universally acclaimed by critics worldwide. Now comes a release of very popular solo piano works by Chopin. The album includes all four famous Ballades interspersed with shorter Nocturnes. Andsnes intentionally inserted the Nocturnes between the Ballades to serve as a ‘breather’ to the epic nature of the Ballades. In doing so he breaks with the tradition of performing and recording the ballades as a cycle
Leif Ove Andsnes’s latest album is a selection of Chopin’s Nocturnes alongside his four famously difficult Ballades. Leif Ove Andsnes’s latest album is a selection of Chopin’s Nocturnes alongside his four famously difficult Ballades. He has been playing the Ballades since he was a teenager in Norway. But only in the past decade has Mr. Andsnes added to his repertory the Fourth, an exhausting work that ends with a coda of dizzying runs. Listening to the recording, it’s clear that he is an ideal match for the piece’s demands. As the New York Philharmonic’s artist in residence last season, he resurrected rarities and dazzled audiences with revelatory interpretations of Rachmaninoff, Britten and more.

Chopin: Ballades & Nocturnes for solo piano by Leif Ove Andsnes, "a pianist of magisterial elegance, power and insight" (New York Times). Interspersing the Romantic master composer’s four Ballades – works immense in the range and power of their expression – with three of his nocturnes, the new album represents the Norwegian pianist’s first recording of Chopin’s music in more than a decade. There were quite a few years where I didn’t play much Chopin
