The most interesting asteroids and dwarf planets, detailed information updated in real time, online sky maps.

Using the cut-off for asteroid diameter of 1 meter, there are estimated to be more than half a billion near-Earth asteroids. For objects that cause major damage if they hit Earth (larger than about 30 meters), there are about a million. So far, we are approaching 20,000 found. But, the effects of Mars’ gravity and Jupiter’s gravity can actually dislodge some asteroids from the inner asteroid belt and that is where we think most near Earth asteroids come from. Chelyabinsk meteorite trail in the sky.

Phaeton (or Phaëton) was the hypothetical planet theorized by the Titius–Bode law to have existed between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, the destruction of which supposedly led to the formation of the asteroid belt (including the dwarf planet Ceres). The hypothetical planet was named for Phaethon, the son of the sun god Helios in Greek mythology, who attempted to drive his father's solar chariot for a day with disastrous results and was ultimately destroyed by Zeus.

And for a true planet-killer, one sufficient to make the entire biosphere unsurvivable, there's nothing we could do. We could try to stockpile sufficient resources on the ISS or similar to let a handful of human beings live on for a number of months after the impact, but the ISS is not anywhere remotely close to being capable of becoming self-sustainable, so all you'd be doing would be to postpone the extinction of humanity by a few months. That should be no harder than sending a probe to a planet or comet or asteroid, and we've done all of those. Whether either of those strategies would actually WORK, though, depends on the factors listed above. We'd definitely need lead times of several decades at least to have any chance at all.

Asteroid impacts are a continuously occurring natural process. Every day, 80 to 100 tons of material falls upon Earth from space in the form of dust and small meteorites (fragments of asteroids that disintegrate in Earth’s atmosphere). Over the past 20 years, . Radar observations can reduce the uncertainly in position of an asteroid from the several thousands of kilometers provided by optical observations to just a few meters.

The Planet stage in the video game Solar 2 consists of two separate but somewhat similar sub-stages, those being the Small Planet and Life Planet. Throughout both forms of the Planet stage you will have a new method to consume mass and grow your controlled object, differing from the Asteroid stage. Gaining Mass as a Planet. Concert Mission 1 + "I’m Late!"

And while scientists are desperately trying to put a plan in place to find these planet-killers to give us as much notice as we can possibly have, there's still the question of what we'll do about it. We've dug into the topic in great detail, but this video from PBS's Space Time gives a fantastic little overview of the most plausible solutions for diverting an incoming asteroid. Everything from blowing it up, to hitting it with something big and heavy, to painting half of it white

We are not of this planet. We do not understand Your strange customs. Your planet's ecosystem Is failing. Your leaders deny this. RealAudio/28k RealAudio/ISDN MP3. From the album Six Billion Humans Can't Be Wrong.
