Pierre Monteux recorded Rimsky's immortal 'Scheherazade' at least twice but I believe this was his first attempt. Despite the fact that it was recorded in 1942, the opening is a real 'grab you by the throat' experience. After that, it simply doesn't let go. This is dynamic music making which makes this indestructible war horse come alive. And whilst I don't think the San Francisco orchestra, as recorded here, was the virtuoso instrument it is today there is plenty of commitment from all the musicians.
