Head Above Water is the sixth studio album by Canadian singer Avril Lavigne. It was released on February 15, 2019, through BMG Rights Management. It is Lavigne's first studio release since her self-titled fifth studio album (2013), marking the longest gap between two of her studio albums.

During the (unofficial) hiatus, Lavigne was diagnosed with Lyme Disease, from which it took years to recover from. Leading up to September 2018, Avril announced her comeback in an emotional letter to her fans. The title track and lead single, Head Above Water was released on September 19, 2018 and peaked at on the Billboard Hot 100. The pop-rock power ballad see’s Lavigne’s connection with God growing stronger as she fights her own death and mortality. A few months later in December, the R&B-soul ballad (a wild change in style for the singer) Tell Me It’s Over was announced and released. The song discusses a toxic relationship and has Lavigne putting on her best Billie Holiday impression.

Avril Lavigne consistently delivers strong vocals, and her spirit also shines throughout the course of the record. There are too many ballads, some of which overlap in messaging. Still, the good outweighs the mediocre, even if Head Above Water is imperfect. Avril has been one of the prominent examples of a pop star over a decade. Her ground-breaking debut album Let Go has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, becoming her highest selling album to date. The sophomore album Under My Skin shows much more maturity from her both vocally and lyrically. Sadly, the pop-rock queen (sometimes punk) started to deliver something more generic and sloppy projects. The Best Damn Thing wasn’t tragic at all. It was just the beginning of confusion. After six years of interval, she came back with an emotional and spiritual single "Head Above Water" which is the title of the album where she sings her struggle and near-death experience of battling with Lyme disease. This emotional piano-ballad really sets the tone of the album. Birdie" is an effortless piano ballad with well-written lyrics and Avril’s vocal is the best part of the track.

Head above water (4/5). I think it was a good choice to name the album after this song, since it summarizes the whole spirit of it: an album of self-discovery. Another power ballad. A realization of freedom. That kinda of love that gets you locked in a cage, until the moment you realize you want to be free, like a bird and fly away from it.
