Lady Gypsy by David Brent & Foregone Conclusion. David Brent, Foregone Conclusion. Record Label Juxtaposition Records, Caroline International, 4799870. Year of production 2016. Thank Fuck It's Friday. 9. Please Don't Make Fun Of The Disableds.
The soundtrack is from Brent and his band Foregone Conclusion and features 15 tracks, including the previously released 'Equality Street'. The film is set 15 years after the events of The Office and follows Brent, a sales rep after leaving Wernham Hogg, as he self funds a tour with his band Foregone Conclusion. The album has been produced by Burrows and Gervais, who had this to say about the album: ""Even thoug the songs are funny in context, they’re not comedy songs as such. David Brent doesn’t think they’re funny. He thinks they’re important. And actually they’re not terrible songs.
Although Brent's musical aspirations are hinted at over the course of The Office's two seasons, it wasn't until 2013 that Gervais was given an opportunity to embellish them, in the form of the Comic Relief charity single "Equality Street. With the waters tested and a taste of musical recognition, for both Gervais and Brent, the wheels were set in motion for a feature-length film and a meta-debut record. If this was a serious album, that kind of sequencing would be unforgivable, but the final verdict depends a lot on perspective. If this is Brent's album, existing for comedic reasons purely to accompany the film, then it fulfills its purpose. However, taken at face value, it's nothing more than a mish-mash of classic rock tropes and controversial lyrics. Either way you look at it, it's a vanity project - the question is, whose ego was it designed to please?
David Brent on stage at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London ( PA ). You can’t keep a good character down and so, hot on the heels of Alan Partridge’s all-guns-blazing rebirth on the big screen comes David Brent, the live rock experience. The former Office manager and monstrous comic creation of Ricky Gervais re-emerged earlier this year with Equality Street, a hilariously inept racial reggae tune for Comic Relief. With numbers like that, a live tour was inevitable and this, the first of two work-in-progress gigs for Brent and his band, the aptly named Foregone Conclusion, sold out in under a minute, with touts offering tickets for £1000. It’s fair to say that Slough’s answer to a Jon Bon Jovi tribute act still has his fans. Thank f@ it's Friday.
