One of the best American bands ever. Their strong folk music influence changed the rock sound for a long time and their songs still resonate today. 14 The Mamas & the Papas The Mamas & the Papas were an American folk rock vocal group that recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968, reuniting briefly in 1971. This group has songs that are in movies and everyone in my age group has at least one album. Should be in the upper 20s. This list is a joke if Steppenwolf isn't on it. They have one thing that almost no other bands from the 60s has 2 immortal songs: Born to Be Wild and Magic Carpet ride. I mean everyone has at least heard one of those two song once in their life and if you think you haven't look them up and you'll find that you have. They made the 60s look like how we look at it today, hard rock and psychedelic.

It made for an album that could appeal to everyone from new age receptionists to dubheads to prog-rock pharmacists. Lest it be forgotten, this is also one of the most supremely hypnotizing drug albums ever. There are more rocket launches here than a New Years' Eve Kiss concert in Los Alamos. 095: Massive Attack Mezzanine. Even in the blacklit genre of trip-hop, nothing hit the low register like the pulses of the brooding "Angel" or the choked-out, smoked-out vocals on "Risingson". But what saves this from being a mere opium drip soundtrack are the flashes of pop: the subtle hooks, the dependable songwriting, and- most of all- the spare use of Elizabeth Fraser's high vocal wisps.

Many of these bands and artists had extensive careers, either in the US or other countries, they just didn't ever have another single reach the Top 40 after the songs on this list. Vote up and down your faves! Many of the bands and artists listed had popular hits in their native countries. For example, Shocking Blue's only breakthrough song in America was the now-iconic "Venus," but they had a number of successful hits in their native Netherlands. Additionally, many of the artists on the list had massive success with other groups or projects.

Actually, not very well at all. Thirty years ago, I would’ve been a little less than three weeks away from turning four years old. So, I can be forgiven if I don’t recall Ronald Reagan urging Soviet Premiere Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall, Pope John Paul II making his first ever papal tour up the coast of California, or even China opening its inaugural Kentucky Fried Chicken location. We don’t remember you much, but we grew up and listened. These are the albums we wish we’d have been old enough to appreciate back then and are grateful for now.
