Released September 30, 1935. Porgy and Bess Tracklist. It Ain't Necessarily So Lyrics. Gershwin’s one full-length opera was adapted from DuBose Heyward’s novel Porgy, with a story set among the poor African-Americans living on the waterfront of Charleston, . as a crippled beggar tries to save a woman from her abusive lover and her drug dealer. The opera premiered in Boston in September 1935, with Alexander Smallens conducting. It was poorly received, but its arias and songs had been embraced by jazz and R&B musicians, and a Houston production in 1976 revived its reputation on the stage. Porgy and Bess Q&A.

Porgy and Bess is an opera, first performed in 1935, with music by George Gershwin, libretto by DuBose Heyward, and lyrics by Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward. It was based on DuBose Heyward's novel Porgy and subsequent play of the same title, which he co-wrote with his wife Dorothy Heyward. All three works deal with African-American life in the fictitious Catfish Row (based on the area of Cabbage Row) in Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 1920s

It was adapted from Dorothy Heyward and DuBose Heyward's play Porgy, itself an adaptation of DuBose Heyward's 1925 novel of the same name. It featured a cast of classically trained African-American singers-a daring artistic choice at the time

The studio recording of this production was based on Gershwin's original full score. It did not incorporate the cuts and other changes which Gershwin had made before the New York premiere, nor the ones made for the 1942 Cheryl Crawford revival or the 1959 film version. It allowed the public to take in the operatic whole as first envisioned by the composer. In this light, Porgy and Bess was accepted as an opera. The stage production won the Houston Grand Opera a Tony Award, the only opera ever to receive one, and a Grammy Award.
