Static Age is an album by American horror punk band the Misfits, recorded in 1978. Though technically the band's debut album, it was not released in its entirety until 1996. In August 1977 The Misfits released their debut single "Cough/Cool" on Blank Records, a label operated by the band's lead vocalist Glenn Danzig. Several months later Mercury Records issued a Pere Ubu record on their own Blank Records imprint, unaware that Danzig held a trademark on the name.

When Static Age finally saw the light of day, in 1996, as part of The Misfits box set, it felt more like a time capsule being unearthed than a record release. Misfits didn’t release a proper debut album until 1982’s Walk Among Us, but by that point, the production was far more polished. What set Static Age apart was the palpable urgency of a young band eager to prove itself-that and an almost surgical knack for crafting infectious melodies. It helped that Danzig was so eager to show off his vocal range, rather than taking the Ian MacKaye or Henry Rollins route and just barking lyrics.

Static Age was released on July 15, 1997 by the Misfits. Originally recored during 1978, the band was unable to find a record label willing to publish their album leading the band to produce singles instead. Eventually the Static Age recordings were shelved. However, in 1983 after the band’s break-up, singer Glenn Danzig reworked and reissued unreleased songs from the album, and in 1996, along with the Misfits Box Set, a complete Static Age album was released. In 1997, three remaining tracks were mixed and released in a stand-alone version of Static Age that July.

Full" being relative, admittedly; like the band's other few full-length efforts, Static Age barely cracks the half-hour mark, packing in 14 songs (plus a brief crackle of, naturally, static at the start and finish). Everyone in the band as they stood at the time just smokes; the recording quality is raw and strong, and those qualities which helped the Misfits stand out from the pack, especially Danzig's amazing singing and Franche Coma's fierce guitar takes on the singer's melodies, are on fine display.
