Glenn Miller and His Orchestra was an American swing dance band formed by Glenn Miller in 1938. Arranged around a clarinet and tenor saxophone playing melody, and three other saxophones playing harmony, the band became the most popular and commercially successful dance orchestra of the Swing era and one of the greatest singles charting acts of the 20th century.

Ray Miller was a popular bandleader of the 1920s who performed and recorded with various top-notch musicians under such names as Ray Miller and His Orchestra, Ray Miller’s Orchestra and Ray Miller and His Brunswick Orchestra. Starting off as a singing waiter in 1916 in Chicago, he made his way to New York where he started his first band, The Black and White Melody Boys, playing mostly Dixieland jazz. They recorded tracks on various labels from 1920 to 1923. Miller augmented his band, the style changed to contemporary jazz and by 1924, Miller and his group were recording.

In 1924 his orchestra performed at the White House with Al Jolson, the first jazz band to do so. Biography. Relatively little is known of Miller's private life. He may have been born in Reading, Pennsylvania. In 1916, he worked as a singing waiter at the Casino Gardens in Chicago, home of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band (ODJB). Miller followed the ODJB to New York City, where he formed a band, the Black and White Melody Boys, featuring himself on drums and New Orleans native Tom Brown on trombone
