Tell Me This Is a Dream is the fourth album by American soul group The Delfonics, released in 1972 on the Philly Groove label. This album introduced singer Major Harris to the lineup replacing founding member Randy Cain. Lead single "Hey Love", with its innovative and distinctive use of harmony, is often singled out as one of the group's greatest recordings, but the overall album has tended to divide opinion
The Delfonics – along with the Intruders – were standard bearers for what would become known worldwide as the Philly Sound although their contributions to its growth are often overlooked in the rush to praise those who followed in their wake. They were the first soul act to sell a million on a Philadelphia label, and their collaborations with genius arrangercomposer Thom Bell were instrumental in launching his career as the City Of Brotherly Love’s most admired librettist. It’s unfortunate that their success slightly predated the world’s desire for all things Philly. Had they ridden the crest.
It’s the eponymous song from The Delfonics‘ fourth album Tell Me This Is a Dream. The song was written by William Hart and produced by Thom Bell & Stan Watson. The song tells a story of a man who’s been hurt by his ex-girlfriend (maybe even a wife) and tries to tell her how much he loved her and how much he’s hurt now. The peaceful melody of this song makes it a good fodder for the hip-hop producers who were fond of that kind of sound in the sample-based beats era. It was sampled by many artists, including Lord Jamar, Cappadonna or Strong Arm Steady

The Delfonics is the considerably superior of the pair, including as it does the smash hit "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)," as well as the three subsequent high-charting R&B singles "When You Get Right Down to It," "Trying to Make a Fool of Me," and "Over and Over. Unfortunately, Tell Me This Is a Dream is a letdown in comparison, probably due in no small measure to the absence of Thom Bell, who had been instrumental to the success of the material on The Delfonics as both songwriter and arranger.
