Description

MOZART, SCHUBERT, SCHUMANN PIANO, VIOLIN AND CELLO (PIANO TRIOS) Trio Florestan Mozart - Divertimento in B-Flat Major, K. 254 I. Allegro assai 00:00.

Although 1842 was the magical year in which Schumann produced an unprecedented number of well-received, large-scale chamber works, it was by no means the only time the composer turned to chamber music during his career. Some five years later - perhaps inspired by his wife's piano trio or the highly successful Mendelssohn D minor Piano Trio - Schumann himself turned to the genre. In the space of only a few months, he produced his D minor and F major trios, two works that greatly contrast with one another

The first two piano trios were written in 1847, five years after Schumann had completed his piano quintet and the piano quartet op. 47. These two works can therefore be viewed as works of his maturity. The first trio has a more serious nature than the second but this is only a matter of relativity as both are completely enjoyable and expertly written. Although both trios date from the fertile year of 1847, well before Schumann's mental instability ruined his music, they never seemed the equal of his inspired Piano Quartet and Quintet. Nobody would claim today that they rise to that level, but by giving these trios an impassioned performance, the Florestan made them shine brighter than most music-lovers ever thought they could. the outer movement of both works seem to me the best, along iwth the hesitaiton waltz in the third movement of the second trio.

The Florestan Trio takes its name from Schumann's name for himself in positive and carefree mood. His name for his introspective self was Eusebius. The music is among Dvořák's most celebrated – his two most popular, but very different, piano trios. The dark and disturbing F minor is followed by the folk-inflected 'Dumky' of unconventional form and sunny disposition (a sequence of alternating slow-fast-slow-fast sections). The trio’s associated charity, The Florestan Trust, promoted many educational activities including the commissioning of new works and the encouragement of young artists through  . Anthony Marwood, violin Richard Lester, cello Susan Tomes, piano. In honouring The Florestan Trio with its award for chamber music in 2000, the Royal Philharmonic Society recognized the achievements of the trio in a repertoire in which long-standing, dedicated ensembles have always been rare. The Florestan Trio played together for sixteen years, its members always committed to chamber music despite their parallel involvement in distinguished individual careers. The Florestan Trio is one of the most-recorded piano trios in the world
