Haydn’s ‘piano trios’ (as his accompanied piano sonatas are known) are among the most delightful and inventive of all his works. They have a ‘domestic’ reputation, and indeed they were intended for playing at home. But we make a mistake if we think that this meant that Haydn expected music-making of limited accomplishment. Many outstanding musicians of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries never performed in public for one simple reason: they were women. Haydn wrote for her a set of three piano trios which were published in London in 1797-Hob XV:28 and 29 on this disc, and No 27 in C major (on Hyperion CDA67719). They are not only virtuoso works, but have an exceptionally wide range of expression.

The more I listen to Joseph Haydn on period instruments the more I like the music of this classical era composer. These early Haydn trios don't have the drama or humor of his later works; they're just placid entertainments for the dinner hour. If there's time in your life for such music, though, this could prove a satisfying disc. Trio 1790 plays period instruments with a fine sense of style, and doesn't try to goose the music along. They're content to let it go its way, with sensitive but never overstressed performances that make extremely good sense. For some bizarre reason, cpo is offering this well-produced disc at a greatly reduced price, making it even more attractive. Trio 1790's Haydn is highly charged and fully engaging. If you played this while eating dinner you would probably spill food on your clothing and would likely end up with indigestion.
