Karen O and Danger Mouse have concocted a lush, vivid world on their dreamy and poignant collaboration. On their new record Lux Prima, they appear to revel in the possibility of a blank slate. O said of making Lux Prima that when you create from a blurry place you can go places further than you’ve ever been, while Danger Mouse talked of looking for a place rather than a sound. Listening to the results, I imagine that place to be Paris 1969, Detroit 1964 or Bristol 1995, a blend of Serge Gainsbourg’s orchestral grace, Motown pop hustle, and the packed and dusty sound of ‘90s trip hop. At times, the results are sublime.

For Karen O and Danger Mouse, it was a drunk dial in 2008. At least, that’s how half of this duo featuring the queen of the aughts rock revival and the versatile Grammy-winning producer remembers it. Karen O drew a blank when Danger Mouse (born Brian Burton) brought it up late last month at Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village, where they worked on their new album, Lux Prima. Karen O and Danger Mouse are both serial collaborators, so when this joint album was announced we weren't all that surprised. Even so, we never thought the resultant set would be quite as good as this. Atmospheric, rich and full of songs that variously touch on sweeping cinematic soundtracks, driving Motown soul, fuzzy funk-rock, vintage trip-hop and hazy electronica, "Lux Prima" manages to showcase the best of both artists' talents while refusing to settle on one neatly defined sound. The set's dizzying highs - particularly the near 10-minute title track - are almost.

The nine-song LP is a lush journey down the milky way of their rock ’n’ roll sensibilities, meaning a bit of the signature es heaviness in Karen O’s voice converging with Danger Mouse’s star-gazing, atmospheric production.
