Herbert von Karajan was on the record as saying that he did not believe Schubert's Ninth to be great music, which means that he only recorded it two or three times! Actually, his performance of this (and the "Unfinished") is a pretty good one, sincere and unaffected, with some excellent playing. These EMI recordings are preferable to the ones on DG, as they have more presence and a much more natural balance. Exclusively for Prime members. Sample this album Artist - Artist (Sample). 1. 30. With the Berliner Philharmoniker under Herbert von Karajan, Beethoven's Seventh Symphony resounds with melodic force, the Eighth is a masterful blend of grace and wit, and the Ninth - directed by Karajan himself - is a vital and explicitly dramatic reading of Beethoven's revolutionary work. Cast: Gundula Janowitz, soprano Christa Ludwig, alto Jess Thomas, tenor Walter Berry, bass Chor der Deutschen Oper Berlin Berliner Philharmoniker Conductor - Herbert von Karajan.
Herbert von Karajan conducts the Berliner Philharmoniker on this highly-acclaimed marathon recording of all nine Beethoven symphonies, originally released in 1963. Von Karajan recorded the entire cycle of Beethoven's symphonies four times during his career; this recording ranks as the finest by many critics and fans. Never before had all nine Beethoven's symphonies been recorded and released as an integrally planned subscription set. The financial risk was substantial, and it was estimated that record label Deutsche Grammophon would have to sell 100,000 boxes just to break even.
Things aren't any better in the Andante con moto, where Karajan continues his mad dash without slowing down to savor the poignant melodies or exquisite harmonies. Having lost the grandeur of the first movement and the pathos of the second, Karajan goes on to gracelessly stomp through the Scherzo without appreciating either its humor or the lyricism of the Trio, and whips the Finale into a froth with a prestissimo tempo that is practically in perpetual motion.
The Berlin Philharmonic (German: Berliner Philharmoniker) is a German orchestra based in Berlin. It is traditionally ranked in the top handful of orchestras in the world, distinguished amongst peers for its virtuosity and compelling sound. The orchestra’s history has always been tied to its chief conductors, many of whom have been authoritative and controversial characters, such as Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan.
