Lorin Maazel (1930-2014) was perhaps the most interesting musician of his time. The very number of his engagements as Principal Conductor made him exceptional. After studying piano, violin, harmony, counterpoint and composition, and making his first appearances as a youthful conductor in the USA, where his family had moved from France in 1932, he played the violin in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and studied his spare time.

CD 15: TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No. 4 Berliner Philharmoniker. CD 16: SCHUBERT: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3 Berliner Philharmoniker. Lorin Maazel's early recordings are the ones collected here and they are his finest work. Maazel was always a gifted conductor but as he aged he had a tendency to slow his tempi substantially, which I find conveys a somewhat diffuse and unfocused quality to his interpretations.
