Adagio Johannes Brahms; Emil Gilels; Berliner Philharmoniker; Eugen Jochum. Rondo (Allegro non troppo) Johannes Brahms; Emil Gilels; Berliner Philharmoniker; Eugen Jochum. The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Eugen Jochum recorded this album dedicated to Brahms in the 1970s: the two concertos date back to 1972, recorded amid the warm acoustics of Berlin’s Jesus Christus Kirche, while the seven Fantasias are from a 1975 session in Finland. Late Russian pianist Emil Gilels joins the orchestra on this entire inspired programme which was included on its list of the 100 greatest recordings by Gramophone. 96 kHz, 24-bit PCM – DG Studio Masters. Produced by Günther Breest Tonmeinster (Balance Engineer): Klaus Scheibe Photos: Anthony Altaffer (Cover), Henry.

The concerto sessions took place at a time when we were experimenting with quadraphonic recording, although no Deutsche Grammophon discs were ever issued in that format. When Eugen Jochum was asked in an interview a year before his death about the finest recordings of his long and distinguished career, he singled out the Brahms concertos with Gilels for special mention. Considering that Jochum was only accompanying a soloist, it is hard to imagine a more eloquent tribute to the discs’ success.
