Pacific Ocean Blue is nearly as good as everyone has always said it was. And the poignancy of Wilson's life and death further enforces its status as a critical holy grail. It even may be worthy of the quantity of chin that has been stroked to it over the years. Released in 1977, it was the first ever Beach Boy solo album, and much to the chagrin of Mike Love in particular, it became the sort of artistic success that the group themselves hadn't enjoyed for a long while. Written and recorded in fits and starts since the mid-70s, Wilson took his brother Brian's painstaking approach, but came to the studio as a non-musician, with boundless possibilities that had to offer.

Dennis's cracked, smoke-cured voice, so rarely showcased in the band's pristine vocal blend, turned out to have an appealing, vulnerable quality, and the blend of widescreen production ballads and slick funk grooves gave Pacific Ocean Blue a much firmer grasp of contemporary music styles than The Beach Boys had managed in years. But there's a satisfying, sly intelligence in the way that Wilson and co-producers Greg Jackobsen and Daryl Dragon incorporate classic Beach Boy tropes – the moody solo horn in "Time", the glorious vocal arrangements throughout – into settings.

Summary: Beach Boy Dennis Wilson's solo album is rereleased with songs from his unreleased "Bambu" album and one unfinished track sung by the Foo Fighters' Taylor Hawkins. Record Label: Sony Legacy.

Dennis Wilson wrote and produced a masterpiece which stands independently. River Song" is the most beautiful song on the album, but all of them are easy and wonderful listening. I only imagine what Dennis would have to offer later in his life but "Pacific Ocean Blue is a wonderful legacy. 2 people found this helpful. I've just recently decovered that Dennis Wilson recorded this amazing album. The instrumental version of Holy Man for me is so much better than the Taylor Hawkins version, although he did a fantastic job, he's no Dennis Wilson.

Beach Boy fans know: Dennis was a prodigious music talent and for years nobody knew it. How could anyone know when Brian Wilson, let alone Carl Wilson, and your brothers are in the same band? When their mom insisted Dennis join the group and play drums? It wasn’t until the late 60’s, that Dennis started getting some songs on Beach Boys records and surprising people - his songs had soul as well as hooks. But it wasn’t until 1977 when the world really could hear Dennis’s talents, thanks to his one and only solo album, Pacific Ocean Blue. It’s a stunning album, so soulful and so ofte. ainful. The happy and sunny image that the Beach Boys tried to keep front and center belied the fact that Dennis had a lot of pain in his life (as did each Wilson brother) - failed marriages, musical failures with the Beach Boys, and the omnipresent pressure of Brian Wilson’s state of mind and mental health.
