For decades, Shostakovich fans have waited for Kirill Kondrashin's Execution of Stepan Razin - recorded shortly after he conducted the world premiere on Dec. 28, 1964, and issued on a Melodiya/Angel LP in 1965 - to appear on CD. Other compact discs of this powerful cantata for bass soloist, mixed chorus, and orchestra have been welcome, but always with the caveat that the memory of that old LP retains an unmatched prominence.
