Thus, I bring you the first known concerto for viola, written by 17th & 18th-century composer Georg Philipp Telemann in the early 1700s. The incredibly abundant music of Georg Philipp Telemann largely came to the attention of performers after that of Bach and Vivaldi. Thus it was his concertos in the Italian style that were taken up first. Many of these, including the three on the program here, are accomplished works; the solo writing in the Viola Concerto in G major, TWV 52:C2, is especially nice. But the really distinctive Telemann works are those in which he has room to stretch his somewhat comic musical imagination, and the two programmatic French suites that give this album its title offer ideal examples.
