Description

A guitar lick in G from the renaissance man of flatpicking guitar: Dan Crary.

Dan Crary Format: Vinyl. There really were no solo guitar heroes in bluegrass music (unless you count Clarence White, who never made a solo album before his tragically young death) until Dan Crary made this record back in 1970. Up to that point, the guitar had been almost exclusively a rhythm instrument, and even then its function often appeared to the casual observer to be limited to giving the singer something to do with his hands

Thunderation is one of his super creation which I like so much. More info on Dan Crary. His new album What To Fear is a follow-up to 2014’s acclaimed All I Do Is Lie, which had been Watkins’ first solo effort in nearly a decade, ten years that had been jammed with collaborative projects and a herculean amount of touring. I love his track What To Fear from the album What To Fear. More info on Sean Watkins.

Dan Crary is an imposing figure-both literally and figuratively. At over six feet tall, his eyes peering out behind tinted glasses, his thinned gray hair pulled back into a tight, small pony tail and his gray beard neatly trimmed, Crary speaks with a resonant baritone voice that commands attention. It's fitting then, that Crary spends much of his time teaching Communication Sciences at Cal State Fullerton. As a guitarist, Crary, indeed casts a giant shadow. In 1970 Crary released the first bluegrass album built around the guitar aptly called Bluegrass Guitar.

Although this album features fine accompaniment from Buddy Sparlock, Lonnie Pearce, Danny Jones and Ebo Walker this really is a showcase for Dan Crary's flatpicking. As a bluegrass guitar album it does not show some of the sheer inventiveness that would come later from the likes of Tony Rice, Russ Barenberg, etc... Instead it's a pure driving bluegrass album consisting of mainly fiddle tunes flatpicked on guitar. Highlights include fine renditions of "Reuben", "Blackberry Blossom", "Black Mountain Rag" and "Forked Deer" . At the time this LP was released there were only a handful of people that displayed the power of lead guitar (e.g. Doc Watson) in a bluegrass context so this album was somewhat revolutionary for its time as well.
