Easily the best Rufus Guinchard album, arguably the best ever recording of Newfoundland fiddle. Rufus was one of the leading 20th century fiddlers in Newfoundland. inchard ) This was his first album. Though he was 77-78 years old when it was recorded, his playing was still spectacular. This album does a great job of capturing it. The only accompaniment is his tapping foot

Newfoundland and Labrador is an Atlantic Canadian province with a folk musical heritage based on the Irish, English and Cornish traditions that were brought to its shores centuries ago. Though similar in its Celtic influence to neighboring Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador is more Irish than Scottish and has more elements imported from English and Cornish music than those provinces

For decades, Rufus Guinchard (1899-1990) was the fiddler of choice in communities along the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, often walking many miles to play for square sets, cotillions, and reels that were the main source of community entertainment. After these dances waned in popularity, he was "discovered" in the 1970s by the folklorists from St. John's, and started traveling the world playing his music.
