Dizzy Gillespie was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser, building on the virtuoso style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic complexity previously unknown in jazz. His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, his scat singing, his bent horn, pouched cheeks and his light-hearted personality were essential in popularizing bebop.

The score was written and arranged by pianist Mal Waldron but was performed and recorded by Dizzy Gillespie's quintet of the time. This set is one of Diz's best records of the 1960s (which is saying something), and one of the best jazz film scores period

Cool World is not the bop that Gillespie invented in the 1940s with Charlie Parker, but it does return to blues and fast, straight tempos. This does not mean the head-blow-head of twenty years earlier. Cool World is music of nuance, featuring tempo changes, and extreme control of dynamics by Dizzy.
