Dizzy Gillespie was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser, building on the virtuoso style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic complexity previously unknown in jazz. His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, his scat singing, his bent horn, pouched cheeks and his light-hearted personality were essential in popularizing bebop.

Dizzy Gillespie World Statesman: Tour De Force. 4. Dizzy Gillespie World Statesman: I Can’t Get Started. 5. Dizzy Gillespie World Statesman: Doodlin’. 6. Dizzy Gillespie World Statesman: Night In Tunisia.

This set introduced the new Dizzy Gillespie big band which was making headlines for the acclaim it received (and for the excitement it caused) during its State world tours. Sidemen at the time included trumpeter Joe Gordon (who got to take Gillespie's famous break on this version of "Night in Tunisia"), trombonist/arranger Melba Liston, altoist Phil Woods, pianist Walter Davis and tenors Ernie Wilkins and Billy Mitchell.

Dizzy Gillespie World Statesman: Dizzy’s Blues. 11. 30. Gene Norman Presents Dizzy Gillespie And His Orchestra: Emanon. CD 2 opens with the album "World Statesman". Although not given I can advise the recording date as being June 1956. Plenty of good stuff here featuring such people as Phil Woods, Billy Mitchell and Joe Gordon. Finally we have a straight copy of the original 10" LP of the famous Pasadena concert presented by Gene Norman. No recording date is given but I would guess it to be early 1948. To my mind the two stand out tracks are "Good Bait" and "Manteca".
