The discovery of his excellent soundtrack sessions for Roger Vadim's film Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960, an adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 18th century novel, happened by accident. What they found were the original soundtrack and full sessions cut in New York during a single day in 1959 - the same fertile year that yielded the Monk's At Town Hall; 5 by Monk by 5, and Thelonious.

The album, simply called Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960, was released as a 3-LP box by Sam Records, mastered from the original analog tapes, and a 2-CD set by Saga. And both sound excellent. If you don't have Monk's albums from the 1950s on Riverside, or the ones from the 1960s on Columbia, get those first. And a tip on the Columbias: if you can't find 1st-pressing LPs, get Sony's 2003 CD reissues, remastered by Mark Wilder, as they not only include alternate takes but also restore the original versions of the tracks, which producer Teo Macero had cut, sometimes mangled, in the released versions, often slashing or eliminating Charlie Rouser's solos.

Les Liaisons dangereuses (film). It was a French/Italian co-production.

In 1959, Thelonious Monk recorded the soundtrack for the French film Les liaisons dangereuses. The film is now out-of-print, and Monk’s music from the film has never been officially released. This year, nearly 60 years later, the soundtrack will arrive. Les liasons dangereuses 1960 is coming out on Record Store Day (April 22) via Resonance, WBGO reports. The sessions feature bassist Sam Jones, drummer Art Taylor, and tenor saxophonists Charlie Rouse and Barney Wilen. The double LP box set includes a booklet with essays, never-before-seen photographs, and more.

Thelonious Monk’s soundtrack to Les liaisons dangereuses, the provocative French film directed by Roger Vadim, will be released as a double album this spring. This is Monk in his prime, in a really important era, and it’s apparent that he was still evolving. Thelonious Monk: Les liaisons dangereuses 1960 will be released as a 2-LP deluxe boxed set on April 22, for Record Store Day, with a 2-CD version scheduled for release on June 16. The set is a joint release of two independent labels: Sam Records (founded by Thomas) and Saga Jazz (run by Le Xuan). Here is the opening track, a brisk jog through Monk’s classic rhythm-changes tune, Rhythm-a-Ning.
