Baritone Gerald Finley and saxophonist Jess Gillam join Sir Andrew Davis and the BBC SO for the musical party that is the Last Night of the Proms. The programme includes music by Stanford, Parry and Elgar. Sir Andrew Davis, the much-loved former Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and a veteran steersman of the Last Night, returns to direct the greatest annual party in classical music. The popular nautical theme of traditional favourites by Henry Wood and Thomas Arne is extended in Stanford’s Songs of the Sea, featuring star Canadian baritone Gerald Finley. Another British choral classic, Blest Pair of Sirens – honouring the ‘harmonious sisters, Voice and Verse’ – joins Jerusalem in the centenary year of Hubert Parry’s death.

For the last 10 days we've been counting down to the Last Night of the Proms by adding clips from across the season that reflect the quality and breadth of a summer of music-making. It wasn't easy to make our selections, and we could have picked many more, but we hope you enjoy them. BBC Proms - The Last Night of the Proms. At Prom 27, the BBC Concert Orchestra under Stephen Bell collaborated with some of the folk world's leading musicians, including Julie Fowlis, The Unthanks and Sam Lee. The concert celebrated the history and evolution of the folk music scene in Britain and Ireland while also looking to the future of this ever-evolving genre.
Highlights included Nicola Benedetti's dramatic performance of Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No 1; the Aurora orchestra playing Beethoven's Eroica from memory; and French orchestra Les Siecles breaking into Daft Punk's Get Lucky for their encore. Saturday's Last Night wrapped up the season in traditional good spirits, with Swedish soprano Nina Stemme dressing up as a Valkyrie to deliver Rule Britannia. Stemme later brought the audience to tears with a sublime performance of the Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. Across the UK, fans joined in the fun with Proms in the Park concerts in Enniskillen, Swansea, Glasgow and London's Hyde Park.

Just a few highlights are Holst’s The Planets (21 July, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra/Kirill Karabits) and Messiaen’s giant orchestral cycle Des Canyons Aux Étoiles (BBC SO/Sakari Oramo, 28 July); the UK premiere of Metacosmos by the Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir (22 July); and a new BBC commission, The Moon by Huw Watkins (8 August). Last Night of the Proms. And finally, the Last Night of the Proms on 14 September features all the old favourites: Wood’s Fantasia On British Sea-Songs, as well as Jerusalem and Land Of Hope And Glory. But if you’re nervous about jingoism or political clashes, all I can say is that I went along last year in some trepidation – and found one great party for everybody, no matter your views or the hue of your flag: a celebration indeed of the passion and power of music.
