Description

Symphony No. 7 "Song of the night" by Gustav Mahler 1. Adagio-Allegro con fuoco 2. Nachtmusik I (Allegro moderato) 3. Scherzo 4. Nachtmusik II 5. Rondo.

Otto Klemperer, Hans Rosbaud. Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 "Romantic"; Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 7 "Song of the Night". Symphony No. 7 in E minor ("Song of the Night"). 1. Langsam - Allegro risoluto, ma non troppo.

Symphony No. 7 by Gustav Mahler was written in 1904–05, with repeated revisions to the scoring. It is sometimes referred to by the title Song of the Night (German: Lied der Nacht), which Mahler never knew (and certainly would be unlikely to have sanctioned). Although the symphony is often described as being in the key of E minor, its tonal scheme is more complicated. The symphony's first movement moves from B minor (introduction) to E minor, and the work ends with a rondo finale in C major

A true Mahler pioneer, Hermann Scherchen brought to his Mahler performances an element of expressionist intensity that reflects the conductor's long association with Schoenberg and the other members of the Second Vienna School. Scherchen's somewhat eccentric - but still idiomatic - Mahler recordings (originally produced by Westminster in the early 1950s) are now being reissued in state-of-the-art 24Bit/96khz CD remasterings by Deutsche Grammophon. Schoenberg regarded it as the work that signalled the end of romanticism, the historic moment at which all the tenets that had sustained music for the previous century began to crumble away. The symphony's sense of inhabiting a twilight world in which all the old certainties were being questioned and found wanting - two of its most disconcerting movements are labelled "Nachtmusik" - perhaps led to its nickname, The Song of the Night

Possessing neither a "program" nor a folk-song theme, it is a purely instrumental composition, both hopeful and romantic in mood, with a harmonic and stylistic structure that evokes the daily journey from dusk till dawn.
