The album was recorded and mixed at the Shelter Studio in Hollywood, California. Initially following its release, the album received little attention in the United States.

The album is the bands first full album with bassist Ron Blair since 1981s Hard Promises, in November 2009, Petty told Rolling Stones David Fricke that it was his intention to record the album live in the studio without overdubs.
