Long After Dark is the fifth studio album by American rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released November 2, 1982 on Backstreet Records. Notable for the MTV hit "You Got Lucky", the album was also the band's first to feature Howie Epstein on bass and harmony vocals. Epstein's vocals are prevalent throughout the album and from that point on, became an integral part of the Heartbreakers' sound.

Unfortunately, Petty had a dry spell on Long After Dark. With its swirling, minor key guitars, "You Got Lucky" is a classic and "Change of Heart" comes close to matching those peaks, but the remaining songs rarely rise above agreeable filler. Since the Heartbreakers are a very good band, it means the record sounds pretty good as it's playing, but apart from those few highlights, nothing much is memorable once the album has finished. And coming on the heels of two excellent records, that's quite a disappointment.

By the time of this 1982 album, Tom Petty was a bona fide American rock star, if not exactly a pop icon. Perhaps bowing to that status, Petty essentially commercialized a sound that had heretofore worn its Dylan/Byrds influences proudly on its sleeve. Perhaps he and the Heartbreakers had become status conscious-or mistakenly took their oft-misapplied new wave label too close to heart. Or, more likely, Petty's muse was simply strained to the limit after four exceptionally strong albums in a row and the interminable touring that went with them.

Released in 1982, this is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' fifth studio album. Produced by Jimmy Iovine, who forced it in another musical direction than what Petty himself felt to be fit at the time. Iovine wanted to get back to the "Damn the Torpedoes (1979)" formula, which meant more rough rocking songs, while Petty was into a more acoustic mood after the "Hard Promises (1981)" album.

After that, Petty and the band come close to touching on Bowie-esque glam through The Same Old You and then closer to good ol’ boy Southern Rock with disillusionment of Two Worlds before sort of cat-calling their way out on an Island Pop wave with A Wasted Life to close the proceedings down. That might not sound like praise at first, but keep in mind that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had released no album which could make the same claim before.
