The debut by the young Findlay Brown confounded my preconceptions. We’re miles from both Jamie T and James Morrison territory here. The limpid vocals and unearthly harmonies, the melancholy mood, even the maritime imagery, evoke the 1960s and 1970s folk of Simon and Garfunkel or Crosby, Stills and Nash. The first third of this album is beautifully managed: the moment when a percussion beat first enters, some way into the second song, is magical. But it does start to flag slightly in the second half, despite the lift given by the propulsive Losing the Will to Survive.
