Everyone who loves Prokofiev is profoundly grateful that this recording of War and Peace exists. Before Erato recorded it, the work was nearly unknown in the west. It was Prokofiev's masterpiece and his grandest, most humane, most lyrical, most dramatic, and most epic work. And the chance to actually hear it whole and uncut was a wonderful thing. But while everyone was profoundly grateful, some listeners were less than whole-hearted in their admiration. Lajos Miller is a powerful but not quite secure Prince Andre. Wieslaw Ochman is a strong but edgy Pierre. Nicolai Gedda is a convincingly characterized but not especially well-sung Anatole. The French Radio Choir sounds like the French Radio Choir, that is, it lacks the strength and conviction to portray the Russian people. The Orchestre National de France plays adequately, but not much more. Track Listing - Disc 1. Title/Composer.

War and Peace (Op. 91) (Russian: ????? ? ???, Voyna i mir) is an opera in two parts (an Epigraph and 13 scenes), sometimes arranged as five acts, by Sergei Prokofiev to a Russian libretto by the composer and Mira Mendelson, based on the novel War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. Although Tolstoy's work is classified as a novel, the 1812 invasion of Russia by the French was based on real-life events, and some real-life people appear as characters in both the novel and the opera, .

Choeurs de Radio France & Orchestre National de Radio France. Mstislav Rostropovich. Galina Vishnevskaya (Natasha Rostova), Nicolai Gedda (Anatol Kuragin), Lajos Miller (Prince Andrei Bolkonsky), Dimiter Petkov (Count Ilya Rostov), Stefania Toczyska (Helena Bezukhova), Wieslaw Ochman (Count Pytor Bezukhov), Mira Zakai (Princess Maria Bolkonsky), Eduard Tumagian (Napoleon Bonaparte). Prokofiev composed his adaptation of Tolstoy's mighty War and Peace during World War II. In 1986, as the Cold War entered its final phase, the exiled Mstislav Rostropovich conducted this superb recording of the opera with his wife, Galina Vishnevskaya, in the central role of Natalya Rostova. Rostropovich had been Prokofiev's student and knew him well.

ORTF National Orchestra, ORTF Chorus Mstislav Rostropovich - conductor. In the summer of 1941 Prokofiev and his wife were living amidst the pine forests of Kratovo near Moscow. Rather like Vaughan Williams in England, Prokofiev wished to do his composerly duty for his country. War and Peace is a vast canvas across which to spread an evening's opera. The main competition for the present set comes from the ed Erato set of the complete opera.

War and Peace is a novel by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy. It is regarded as a central work of world literature and one of Tolstoy's finest literary achievements. The novel chronicles the history of the French invasion of Russia and the impact of the Napoleonic era on Tsarist society through the stories of five Russian aristocratic families. Portions of an earlier version, titled The Year 1805, were serialized in The Russian Messenger from 1865 to 1867.

While this is a first for the Paris Opera, "War and Peace" has some Paris history. In 1967 and 1971 it was given in French in concert form by Radio France, both conducted by George Sebastian. In 1986, Mstislav Rostropovich conducted a concert performance and made a complete recording with the Orchestre National de France and with Galina Vishnevskaya, Nicolai Gedda and Nicola Ghiuselev in the cast, and in the same year the Bulgarian National Opera of Sofia came to the Theatre des Champs-Elysees with its production, staged by the Bolshoi's Boris Pokrovsky, a veteran of some.
