The last album of this era, The Stargate, went a step further by introducing a wider range of instruments including acoustic guitars, flutes and dark vocals; mainly provided by Sarah Jezebel Deva. Era II. Songs on The Smell of Rain were electropop, and frontman Ellefsen took to lead vocals for the first time. Ellefsen's choice of dreadlocks (sometime after Era I), and various outfits helped produce the "Mortiis image". When asked as to what the mask represents he has answered, "I do not look upon myself as a goblin, or troll, or elf, or medieval. Mortiis has been known to repair his live clothes by using black tape to seal holes and tears

The Stargate ends the first era of Mortiis. But this time period wasn’t just fertile for his namesake; Ellefsen had several other projects during the 1990s which all stand side by side with his work as Mortiis. With more deluxe reissues coming, festival appearances planned and interest in his music stronger than ever I wanted to know one last thing: what’s the one thing Ellefsen wants people to understand about him as a man and an artist?
