State Champs album Living Proof has a slightly different sound than their previous releases. During my first listen, I found the new style a bit unsettling. It sounds more produced, and shiny, and contains more open space. Far too often, the vocals take over and the instrumentals take a back seat. This takes place during quite a few verses throughout the album, and although strong instrumentals do certainly kick in during a lot of the choruses, I just can’t help feeling that too many verses are missing something.

They will forever be champions, so it is no great surprise that State Champs remain triumphant with Living Proof, which arrives this Friday, June 15th, thanks to Pure Noise Records.

Make no mistake; Living Proof is an absolute shot in the arm, with frenzied, white knuckle pop-punk bangers permeating a majority of the track listing. While palate cleansers do arise, they feel more like they exist solely for the sake of providing the album with some much needed breathing room in light of all the explosive, feel-good energy that rests at the core of the album. Save for these blunders, State Champs third outing is a strong argument for the best summer album of 2018. There's hit potential in virtually every track and the glossy production values and spruced up musicianship help reaffirm State Champs' status as heavy weights in the pop-punk genre, destined to rise above the rest.

Though State Champs had no intention of working with Hoppus, the punk legend stopped by Feldmann’s studio while the band was recording and quickly took a liking to them Before long, Hoppus was helping the band write a pair of songs, working with DiScanio on the lyrics, and then jumping in the vocal booth to lay down some parts of his own. We had no idea he was even coming in, said DiScanio, Then the next day, me and Mark Hoppus are just sitting out by John Feldmann’s pool writing lyrics from scratch.
