Righting themselves via their long-awaited return to rock Accelerate, . regrouped and rediscovered their core strengths as a band, strengths they build upon on its 2011 sequel, Collapse into Now. Cautiously moving forward from Accelerate’s Life's Rich Pageant blueprint, . steer themselves toward the pastoral, acoustic moments of Out of Time and Automatic for the People without quite leaving behind the tight, punchy rockers that fueled Accelerate’s race to the end zone. This broadening of the palette is as deliberate as Accelerate’s reduction of .
Good news: Collapse into Now drizzles his high, honeyed voice everywhere. His choirboy pipes sweeten the mandolin ballads and brighten the chunky rawk riffs. For that reason alone, the 15th album from the Athens, Georgia, icons is their best since the pre-Google days. To ensure that sort of endorsement from critics, . pulls tested ideas from its first five Warner Bros. Every Day Is Yours to Win wrings the treacle from Everybody Hurts to tap your heartstrings with xylophone mallets. The massive, tremolo-rippled guitars in Discoverer echo those of Green and Monster.

Due out March 8 and featuring guest spots by Peaches, Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye and Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, "Collapse Into Now" was produced by Garret "Jacknife" Lee, who manned the boards for the band's previous album, 2008's "Accelerate. Mills describes the new project, which is the band's last record for its longtime label Warner Bros. as a compilation of "balls-to-the-wall rockers, slow sad songs great mid-tempo songs in the tradition of . We had quality, top to bottom.
Bits and pieces from every great . record are present on Collapse Into Now, but the ease with which the band once combined these elements is now tenuous and hard-fought.
Patti Smith came up with the title Collapse Into Now for . s 15th album, and that’s exactly what happened-the band merged choice instrumental elements from their past with lyrics about today. Everything die-hard fans love is on this disc, including Peter Buck and the mandolin, a couple of shiny-happy-type tunes, guitar-driven rockers, and a power ballad or two. It sounds like a greatest hits compilation, except it’s not, though there are definitely songs that could earn a place on a future best of recording. Michael Stipe’s lyrics usually determine the direction of any .
