Steve Reich's Quartet: III. Fast, performed by Colin Currie Group.
Performer – Colin Currie Group. Other Versions (3 of 3) View All. Cat. Pulse, Quartet (CD, Album).
But Pulse/Quartet-Reich’s first major release since Radio Rewrite, his pallid exposition on two Radiohead songs-reaffirms that position in the dullest possible way: through technical challenges meant to push his familiar approach to new ends. Pulse is one of Reich’s works for a large ensemble-four violins, two violas, two flutes, and two clarinets, all undergirded by the persistent plunk of the piano and electric bass. Context does Pulse/Quartet no favors. Reich has rarely been a pure stylist or technician, even if his landmark Music for 18 Musicians hints otherwise. Instead, he’s often wrestled with big, burdensome issues-the struggle for civil rights in the United States, the arbitrary indiscretion of tragedies such as the Holocaust, the assassination of Jewish journalist Daniel Pearl in Pakistan just after 9/11, and the events and implications of 9/11 itself.

This album consists of two compositions by Steve Reich, Pulse (2015) and Quartet (2013). Reich considered that Quartet was one of his more complex pieces to perform due to the frequent changes in key and tempo, with pauses. So Pulse is the anthesis of this with simpler harmonics and a constant bass line to provide a solid structure
Performer: Steve Reich Album: Pulse, Quartet Label: Nonesuch Records.
Genre: Modern Classical. Both works are performed by the groups for which they were written, Pulse for the US-based International Contemporary Ensemble, Quartet for the Colin Currie Group, and the close-up perspective of the recordings suits both pieces perfectly.
December 27, 2017 In News. A complementary duo from the classical maestro. Composer Steve Reich is releasing a new album featuring his Pulse and Quartet compositions, this March via Nonesuch Records. Pulse, which was created in 2015, has been performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble. Quartet, which was created in 2013, was performed by the Colin Currie Group – an ensemble featuring percussionist Colin Currie who specialises in Reich’s music
Quartet: II. Slow, 03:58. Quartet: III. Fast, 05:53.
Two contrasting works by Steve Reich are treated to thrilling world premiere recordings. Pulse, written in 2015 for winds, strings, electric piano, and bass, is one of the Minimalist composer’s calmer, more contemplative works, its musical phrases gently undulating, unfolding, and morphing over a simple, pulsating bassline. From 2013, Quartet-for two vibraphones and two pianos-is classic Reich. Its dancing rhythms and subtly changing harmonies are performed with irrepressible, driving spirit, impeccable ensemble, and an intuitive sense of instrumental balance and blend.
