Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (April 18, 1924 – September 10, 2005) was an American musician from Louisiana and Texas known for his work as a blues musician, as well as other styles of music. He spent his career fighting purism by synthesizing old blues, country, jazz, Cajun music and R&B styles. His work also encompasses rock and roll, rock music, folk music, electric blues, and Texas blues.
Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown was more than just a blues musician, throughout his long career he embraced many of the tributaries of American music. As well as being a superb guitarist, influenced heavily, like . King, on the style of T-Bone Walker, he was also a proficient violin, mandolin, fiddle and harmonica player. This 2CD set features the A and B side of all his releases between 1947 and 1961 and brings together all of his earliest singles for the peacock label on one collection. Jasmine Records does a fine job here assembling the entirety of Texas electric blues ace Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's formative work: his first two singles on LA's Aladdin label in 1947 and his twenty singles on Don Robey's Peacock label out of Houston from 1949 to 1961. There's no way to avoid a bit of murkiness with the sound of the earliest sides, but the artistry shines through.

Only 12 songs long, this collection remains the best place to begin appreciating why so many young Texas blues guitarists fell in love with Gatemouth Brown's style (until MCA decides to compile the ultimate Brown package, anyway). Listen to the way his blazing axe darts and weaves through trombonist Pluma Davis' jazzy horn chart on 1954's "Okie Dokie Stomp," and/or the stratospheric licks drenching "Dirty Work at the Crossroads
Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's 1950s recordings fuse the energy of big-band horns, the shuffles and boogies of R&B, and his own white-hot guitar leads. Greatly influenced by fellow Texans Blind Lemon Jefferson and T-Bone Walker, Brown absorbed their smooth, melodic, single-string solo technique, but added a rough-edged intensity to his explosive style. The slow blues "Dirty Work at the Crossroads" added Jimmy McCracklin's rolling piano to Brown's bold and brash guitar work, but it was the 1954 instrumental "Okie Dokie Stomp" that put Brown on the.
