I'm happy to say The Classic Crime, for the most part, overcame the obstacles in its way in writing What Was Done. The band's growth from its debut to 2012's Phoenix has been quite drastic, giving Matt MacDonald a good deal to work with. This isn't a straightforward "swap out the guitars and send the drummer home" acoustic job, mercifully. Oddly, the biggest weakness of What Was Done is the track selection. The debut Albatross is somewhat over-represented (though, again, it's been eight years, it's forgivable), and The Silver Cord, the band's best album by a long shot and yet the one they seem most eager to forget, only appears twice. And those appearances are among the album's low points - "Salt in the Snow" and "God and Drugs," both highlights on a fantastic album, just don't offer anything new when "Revisited.

The Classic Crime financed the recording of What Was Done, Vol. 1 with a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter that was a rousing success, bringing in over three times the campaign's original funding goal.

The Classic Crime's first album, Albatross, receives the largest volume of attention while only two songs are taken from 2012's Phoenix. This really isn't necessarily a problem because the new, acoustic versions of the older music reflect more careful workmanship than an average acoustic venture. Although most of the ballads the band chose to tinker with don't seem to need a makeover (especially the acoustic version of the strong "Name" which sounds very similar to the original), the rockier tracks from Albatross sound the best in their updated form. The well-executed acoustic rock music is the distinguishing quality of the album that could have been just a lazy effort. JFH Staff's Second Opinion.
