The Mummers Parade is held each New Year's Day in Philadelphia. It is believed to be the oldest folk festival in the United States. Local clubs (usually called "New Years Associations") compete in one of four categories (comics, fancies, string bands, and fancy brigades). The Joseph A. Ferko String Band or Ferko String Band is a perennial performer in Philadelphia's Mummers Parade. They gained national popularity through their hit recordings in the 1940s and 1950s. mandolin, saxophone, and violin but the details of musical balance are largely ignored yet often achieved. The elaborate costumes are such essential part of the performance that a 1995 theft of the apparel caused the cancellation of several shows Appearances in film and television. The Ferko String Band can be seen briefly in the movie Miracle on 34th Street.

The Mummers Parade begins at City Hall and continues south to Washington Avenue. While the performers put on a show throughout the entire shindig, three special performance areas are designated along Broad Street, also known as the Avenue of the Arts. Judging takes place at 15th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard. The clubs, split into five categories - Comics, Wench Brigades, Fancies, String Bands and the Fancy Brigades - function mainly to stage their playful performances on New Year’s Day. The 2016 Philadelphia Mummers Parade will take place on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2016. The Mummers Parade always occurs on the first day of the year unless postponed by parade officials. In 2015, Ferko String Band played tribute to India:, Philadelphia Division is a brand new group that the city started to improve the diversity of the parade, which has traditionally been not all that inclusive (note the high degree of cultural appropriation in the above clips). There’s a group of drag performers (the Miss Fancy Brigade which has marched previously), a Mexican group (both shown below), a Puerto Rican drum and dance team and a drill team.
