McKinney's Cotton Pickers. Were an African American jazz band, in Detroit, Michigan, United States, in 1926 by William McKinney, who expanded his Synco Septet to ten pieces. Cuba Austin took over for McKinney early on drums. Between 1927 and 1931, they were one of the most popular African-American bands. Many of their records for Victor were bestsellers. In 1926 his outfit became known as McKinney's Cotton Pickers, and the following year they scored a major coup by hiring alist Don Redman away from Fletcher Henderson. As the band's musical director, Redman put together an outfit that competed successfully with Henderson and the up-and-coming Duke Ellington  . McKinney organized later versions of the Cotton Pickers but without making an impression.

The Cotton Pickers Volume 1. The Cotton Pickers. Cotton Pickers was the generic band name that Brunswick Records used on its small jazz band recordings made in 1922-1923, 1924-1925, and again in 1929. These were intended to compete with popular dance records issued on other labels by groups such as Ladd's Black Aces, Bailey's Lucky Seven, and the Memphis Five. The earliest incarnation of Cotton Pickers was led by clarinetist Bennie Krueger and included trumpeter Phil Napoleon, trombonist Miff Mole, and pianist Frank Signorelli, all of who also appeared in the Memphis Five.

The third of three French RCA two-Lp sets released in the early 1980's finishes up the McKinney's Cotton Pickers story with the classic big band's final seven songs (plus four alternate takes). Although commercial vocals were starting to dominate, the band (even after leader Don Redman's departure) was still impressive and picking altoist-arranger Benny Carter as the new musical director would have been a good move if the band had been able to continue recording after 1931
