In September 1965, Mingus returned to Monterey (where he had played an enthusiastically received set the year before) prepared to debut several new pieces he’d composed just for the occasion.
Mingus at UCLA 1965" is a remarkable document, possibly the most important music release of 2006, providing your criteria extend beyond mere audio quality and musical precision. This was not a concert but a Mingus "workshop," as he insisted on calling such affairs. Mingus wanted the audience to experience the creative process as much as the product.

Played in its Entirety, at UCLA) is a live album by American bassist, composer and bandleader Charles Mingus recorded at Royce Hall in Los Angeles and first released on Mingus' own Jazz Workshop label in 1966. The album was rereleased by Sue Mingus on the Sunnyside label in 2006
Mingus wrote some of his most ambitious and challenging music for the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1965, assembling an octet from his working quintet, sans the pianist, of Lonnie Hillyer (trumpet), Charles McPherson (alto sax) and Dannie Richmond (drums). Added were trumpeters Hobart Dotson and Jimmy Owens, French horn player Julius Watkins and tuba player Howard Johnson

Played in Its Entirety at UCLA (Mingus Music/Sunnyside). This trio of new releases from revolutionary dleader Charles Mingus spotlights three different bands and three different periods in his remarkably fertile career. The live 2-CD set has its moments, as on "Don't Let It Happen Here," but might be strictly for Mingus diehards.
