1896-1910: The Pittsburgh Orchestra. In 1898, a man steeped in popular music was chosen to lead the Orchestra. Victor Herbert was best known as a man of the theater and had composed a number of comic operas. A flamboyant conductor, he inspired musicians and audiences alike with his boundless enthusiasm. When Herbert left the orchestra in 1904, the Symphony Society chose as his successor a man who could not have been more different. Emil Paur took an intellectual approach to his work and avoided theatrics. He had served as conductor of both the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and held the Pittsburgh Orchestra to the same exacting standards. These included Leopold Stokowski, Leonard Bernstein, Erich Leinsdorf, Charles Munch, Paul Paray, and Victor de Sabata. 1952-1976: The Steinberg Years.
Wagner: Orchestral Music. Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg): Overture.
The Boston Symphony first played Schubert's Symphony No. 9, "The Great", in its inaugural season in 1885 – only forty-six years after Schumann had. Nearly every BSO music director has programmed it, and the orchestra recorded it three times, under Charles Munch, William Steinberg, and principal guest conductor Colin David. Leinsdorf, conducting from memory and without baton, secures a performance that is brisk, but not headlong in the Munch manner. It is clear that he has paid attention in rehearsal – and continues to pay attention in performance – to details of articulation, the clear definition of rhythms, and matters of balance, but he does not stand in the way of the expressivity of his principal players – in this piece, oboist Ralph.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is an American orchestra based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The orchestra's home is Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts, located in Pittsburgh's downtown Cultural District. Its current music director is Austrian Manfred Honeck, who joined the orchestra in 2008, and its current president and CEO is Melia Tourangeau. The Pittsburgh Symphony presents classical, pops, education, community engagement and special concerts throughout the year at Heinz Hall and in the community. These included Leopold Stokowski, Leonard Bernstein, Erich Leinsdorf, Charles Muench, Paul Paray and Victor de Sabata. Italian born, de Sabata came to Pittsburgh in 1948 in part due to the urgings of his colleague Vladimir Bakaleinikoff whom he had conducted in Cincinnati in 1927. Ticket sales exploded with de Sabata at the helm.
