Danzig is the debut album of the American heavy metal band Danzig, released in August, 1988. The album was the first release on producer Rick Rubin's new label Def American Recordings. Def American's successor, American Recordings reissued the album in the United States and United Kingdom in 1998. It remains the band's best-selling album having been certified Gold in the . in 1994, and has since been certified Platinum. Danzig promoted the album with a successful world tour in 1988–1989.

According to Danzig members at the time, James Hetfield of Metallica fame provides backing vocals for "Twist of Cain" and "Possession". The Hunter", a well known blues standard mostly known for being covered by Blue Cheer, was not written by Glenn Danzig, as is claimed in the liner notes. Danzig 4 is notable as the band’s final album on American Recordings, and as the last to feature the original lineup of John Christ (guitar), Eerie Von (bass), and Chuck Biscuits (drums). Shortly after the album had been recorded, Biscuits left the band, returned, and was finally fired. Just prior to the album’s release he was replaced by Joey Castillo. Eerie Von and Christ also intended to leave the band, but decided to stay for the remainder of the tour supporting the album and left the band on July 5 the following year
Moody, muscular and malevolent, the first Danzig album sounded like nothing else on the charts when it was released on August 30th, 1988. It didn't sound like anything in the metal world, either: At a time of peak hairspray and maximum shred, the debut release from Glenn Danzig's latest musical incarnation was all about sweaty blues and controlled menace, delivered with a demonic thrust that made all the pretty boys with electric toys sound even flimsier and more fatuous than they already were . In fact, some longtime fans of Danzig's work had difficulty wrapping their heads (and ears) around Danzig when it first hit the streets. Produced by Rick Rubin, whose Def American imprint also released it, the album - which peaked at on the Billboard 200 in the fall of '88 - was slower, harder, heavier, cleaner and more spacious than anything Danzig had recorded with the Misfits or Samhain, with the music deliberately arranged to let his powerful pipes dominate the proceedings.
