Semele’ is presented in Robert Carsen’s stylish modern dress production, originally seen in London, and most recently staged at the Zurich Opera in 2007. The drama tells of the ambition of the beautiful mortal, Semele, who, not satisfied with being Jupiter’s mistress, strives with fatal results to supplant Jupiter’s wife, Juno. Conceived as an oratorio but nowadays presented as a stage drama, it is a superb vehicle for all the principals, not least the substantial title role, which includes such popular arias as ‘Endless pleasure’ and ‘Myself I shall adore’. Cast: Semele - Cecilia Bartoli Juno - Birgit Remmert Ino - Liliana Nikiteanu Jupiter - Charles Workman Iris - Isabel Rey Cadmus/Somnus - Anton Schringer Athamas - Thomas Michael Allen Chorus of the Opernhaus Zurich Orchestra La Scintilla Conductor - William Christie.

Orchestra ‘La Scintilla’. Cecilia Bartoli (Semele), Liliana Nikiteanu (Ino), Birgit Remmert (Juno), Isabel Rey (Iris), Charles Workman (Jupiter/Apollo), Anton Scharinger (Cadmus/Somnus) & Thomas Michael Allen (Athamas). Cecilia Bartoli’s first operatic Decca DVD release for over 10 years sees her triumphing in the title role of Handel’s late drama, ‘Semele’. This will undoubtedly be the most prestigious start possible to ‘Handel Year’ (marking the 250th anniversary of his death). Semele’ is presented in Robert Carsen’s stylish modern dress production, originally seen in London, and most recently staged at the Zurich Opera in 2007 (where it will be revived in January 2009).

Cecilia Bartoli glows in this production of Handel's Semele. Her voice and acting combine to embody the gloriously beautiful mortal beloved of Jupiter, and Birgit Remmert is superbly sinister as jealous Juno. The Robert Carsten production is spare but very effective, especially in the bed scene. William Christie directs this performance, recorded live in Zurich. 2 people found this helpful. This DVD production was filmed in January 2007 at the Zurich Opera House, The cast here has the very gifted Cecilia Bartoli, the formidable conductor and Baroque authority William Christie and noted producer Robert Carsen. All in all a very successful operation. The other cast members are not so well known as Ms Bartoli but are most all up to the calling except the Ino of Liliana Nikiteanu who goes breathless on occasion.

Cecilia Bartoli sings in the most important concert halls in Europe, in the United States and in Japan. Her stage appearances include prestigious opera houses and festivals such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, La Scala in Milan, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Salzburg Festival and the Zürich Opera House, where she has presented many of her operatic roles for the first time

For more than two decades, Cecilia Bartoli has indisputably been one of the leading artists in the field of classical music. Her new opera roles, concert programmes and recording projects – exclusively on Decca – are eagerly awaited all over the world  .

Semele fell into prolonged neglect until its first stage performances, in Cambridge, England, in 1925 and in London in 1954. These fueled an enthusiasm for the work that has not since lapsed. Semele was staged on four occasions (1959, 1961, 1964 and 1975) by the Handel Opera Society under Charles Farncombe, and it entered the repertory of the Sadler's Wells Opera (now English National Opera) in 1970. The opera returned in 1982 – after a 238-year hiatus – to Covent Garden (the Royal Opera House), conducted, as at Sadler's Wells, by Charles Mackerras. In 2007, Zurich Opera in Switzerland mounted Robert Carsen's 1999 production of Semele as a vehicle for Cecilia Bartoli, with Birgit Remmert and Charles Workman as Juno and Jupiter and William Christie conducting. This staging was taped, issued as a Decca DVD, and successfully transferred (in 2010) to Vienna's Theater an der Wien.

Cecilia Bartoli’s latest album, Antonio Vivaldi (2018) comes almost twenty years after her historic recording, The Vivaldi Album, which was released in 1999 to wide critical acclaim and incredible popular success. The 1999 album sparked a renewed interest in Vivaldi’s operatic works and positioned Bartoli as a champion of neglected or forgotten music.
