Beatles producer George Martin was hanging up his earphones after several decades of making legendary recordings, and decided to make one more where he called all the shots. Settling on a selection of Beatles tunes he had originally produced, he set about pairing up unlikely accomplices with specific tunes and arrangements in mind. The results are in the true George Martin orchestrated tradition, with several interesting twists and turns along the way.

Lennon knew he had something special when he completed this introspective lyric, born out of a poem about his Liverpool childhood. Space had been left for a solo, but an electric guitar felt out of place on such a delicate track. George Martin took a very collaborative approach when working out arrangements with his young charges. There are many instances of Martin transcribing musical notation on the spot, wrestled from the Beatles' impromptu whistles and hums. But perhaps the most memorable occurred during the recording of this Revolver track.

What I do is make sure I provide the fans - and people who don’t even know the Beatles - with music that’s worth listening to and is interesting. You can hear Happiness Is a Warm Gun start out life as quite gentle before ending up on the White Album like a template for Frank Zappa. The Beatles worked through the summer of 1968, often in exhausting all-night sessions. Martin says the multiple takes for many songs may be because the band had largely stopped performing live. I think the most revealing thing for me working on the ‘White Album’ is just how creative they were, all of the time, said Martin.
