Description

Her 2009 recording of the Mozart Piano Concertos nos. 23 and 24, in which she conducted the Cleveland Orchestra as well as playing the solo part, won the .

For her third album of Mozart's piano concertos on Decca, performed live with the Cleveland Orchestra, Mitsuko Uchida conducts from the keyboard and delivers her characteristic style of playing that is both compelling and revelatory. Eschewing the surface patina of period performance, Uchida plays a modern Steinway, and the orchestra plays with a fully modern sound. Yet the issue of authentic Classical style falls by the wayside when Uchida gives the music its voice through her subtle interpretations and refined execution. This CD is part of Uchida's second Mozart concerto cycle, revisiting music she had recorded with Jeffrey Tate and the English Chamber Orchestra in the 1980s and 1990s on Philips.

Uchida’s complete cycle of Piano Concertos recorded for Philips in the 1980s sometimes suffers from the soft-grained and occasionally routine nature of the English Chamber Orchestra's accompaniment under conductor Jeffrey Tate. But that is not a problem with her series of live concert re-recordings for Decca, made in partnership with the Cleveland Orchestra – a top-pedigree ensemble whose Mozart credentials are second to none – which Uchida directs herself from the keyboard.

Lauded as one of today's finest Mozart interpreters, Mitsuko Uchida continues her series of his great piano concertos, performed with the Cleveland Orchestra which she directs from the keyboard. This latest live recording combines Mozart's B flat Major Concerto, No. 18 and the F Major Concerto, No. 19, two of the great series he wrote in Vienna in the mid-1780s. As should be expected, Uchida brings grace and flair to her performance. The Cleveland Orchestra too, with which Uchida has a truly tangible rapport, provide superbly subtle support.

The Piano Concerto No. 9 "Jenamy" (often incorrectly nicknamed "Jeunehomme") in E♭ major, K. 271, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was written in Salzburg in 1777, when Mozart was 21 years old. Mozart completed the concerto in January 1777, nine months after his Piano Concerto No. 8 in C major and with few significant compositions in the intervening period. He composed the work for Victoire Jenamy, the daughter of Jean-Georges Noverre and a proficient pianist.
