Description

David Bowie is the self-titled debut studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 1 June 1967, on Deram Records. Its style and content bears little overt resemblance to the type of music that he was later known for, such as the folk rock influenced "Space Oddity" or the glam rock of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Forget the singles – the 10 greatest David Bowie album tracks show another side to his genius. David Bowie’s sheer plurality makes for one of the most eclectic and distinguished bodies of work in all of rock: glam superstar, soul boy, acoustic folkie, electronic avatar, art-rock pioneer, mainstream pop king. That he departed this world on such a high, with 2016’s stunning Blackstar, has only compounded his reputation. It also means that choosing his finest album-only tracks has become even more challengin. 0) Girl Loves Me (Blackstar, 2016). Taken from the heaviest album that Bowie ever made, the opening track of The Man Who Sold The World is an epic showcase for his songwriting ambition and the extraordinary guitar-playing of Mick Ronson. Its sudden shifts and loose tempos place it in prog territory too, Sabbath-ish noise eliding into acoustic passages before re-emerging as convulsive boogie-blues.

You like David Bowie? His early work was a little too jazzy for my taste, but when Hunky Dory came out in '71, I think he really came into the mainstream, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Freddie Mercury and Alice Cooper, but I think Bowie had a far more flamboyant, androgynous sense of style. In '72, Bowie released this, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spider From Mars, his most critically acclaimed album. But they should, because they're not just about Bowie's alien alter ego, they're also iconic signature tunes in the world of glam rock! RIP David, we will miss you. I LOVE Ziggy Stardust! Was in England when it was released & it was instant love when I heard Starman on the radio; have loved Bowie ever since.

When David Bowie became a superstar in the early '70s, some of the fans who were converted by Hunky Dory or Ziggy Stardust decided to check out collections of his pre-Space Oddity output of the '60s. One of those collections was The World of David Bowie, a 14-song LP that Decca released in the .
