Downtown is an album by Petula Clark (her first album licensed to Warner Brothers Records) following the success of her single of the same title. The album's tracks were all produced, arranged and conducted by Tony Hatch and were recorded at the Pye Studios in Marble Arch with the session personnel including drummer Bobby Graham, guitarist Big Jim Sullivan and the Breakaways vocal group; the "Downtown" track included guitarists Vic Flick and Jimmy Page in addition to Sullivan.
Produced by Tony Hatch. When you're alone and life is making you lonely You can always go downtown When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry Seems to help, I know, downtown. Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty How can you lose? The lights are much brighter there You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares. So go downtown Where all the lights are bright, downtown Waiting for you tonight, downtown You're gonna be alright now, downtown. And you may find somebody kind to help and understand you Someone who is just like you and needs a gentle hand to Guide them along So maybe I'll see you there We can forget all our troubles, forget all our cares.

Sometimes success can create its own crisis, and the number-one chart placement of "Downtown" in late 1964 was one of those times for Petula Clark and the record labels to which she was signed. Faced with a number-one hit on either side of the Atlantic, Pye Records in England and Warner Bros. in America, both needed an album to take advantage of the mega-hit, and the result was the Downtown LP, a quickly assembled collection of recent singles coupled with the title track and a handful of additions

Petula Clark, with a 25-year career in Britain and Europe already behind her, was just another voice emanating from the "British Invasion" when "Downtown" premiered in the . By January '65, she was at the top of the charts, and it was obvious that this was one voice that was destined to outlast most of the others coming to our shores in the wake of the Beatles.
