Downtown is an album by Petula Clark (her first album licensed to Warner Brothers Records) following the success of her single of the same title. The album's tracks were all produced, arranged and conducted by Tony Hatch and were recorded at the Pye Studios in Marble Arch with the session personnel including drummer Bobby Graham, guitarist Big Jim Sullivan and the Breakaways vocal group; the "Downtown" track included guitarists Vic Flick and Jimmy Page in addition to Sullivan.

Complete your Petula Clark collection. Apparently I am a Petula Clark Fan, or at least a fan of her producer/arranger Tony Hatch, because I really liked this garage sale find. I bought it cheap because I recognized some of the singles on it and discovered a rockin' pleasant surprise. It starts off with her doing a version of "Dancing in the streets" that sounds like she hired an entire college marching band to play behind her.

Arranged and produced by Tony Hatch, the album followed on the release of Clark's "I Know a Place" hit single and yielded another UK hit with "You're the One". The latter song was a Top Ten hit in the US for the Vogues and another song introduced by Clark on this album: "Call Me", was reached the US Top 30 via a cover by Chris Montez.
