Roy Dotrice, OBE, (26 May 1923 - 16 October 2017) was a British actor. Born in Guernsey (one of the English Channel islands), Dotrice lied about his age to enlist in the Royal Air Force during World War II. He spent four years in a German prisoner of war camp. He began acting upon his return to England and is a fifty year veteran of the stage and screen. He achieved critical success as John Aubrey in the one-man play Brief Lives, beginning in 1965.
Young Charles Dickens is herded from pillar to post through his irresponsible father's many debts, but his desire to learn is undimmed by the traumas and poverty he endures as a youth. Following success as a House of Commons reporter, Charles publishes his first stories, and is acclaimed as a great talent. The episodes included are: 'Mask'; 'The Deed'; 'Blacking'; 'Love'; 'Success'; 'Fame'; and 'Money'. At first I was put of by Roy Dotrice's theatrical portrayal of John Dickens and after a couple of episodes put the DVD back in its box. Being a big Dicken's fan, I gave it a second go a few weeks later and BRAVO! This series is such a delightful gem and I now love Roy's portrayal of JD and appreciate it a lot more. Roy curiously takes over from the wonderful Gene Foad around 1840 when Dickens was only in his 29th year.
Charles John Huffam Dickens (/ˈdɪkɪnz/; 7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are still widely read today.
