Thirty years after the release of her album Control, Janet Jackson remains essential to the development of pop and the integration of MT. It’s also full of weird, amazing sounds that, 30 years later, it’s easy to take for granted as the way latter-day pop music has always been: polished in a factory to a gemlike gleam. But most of the nine songs on this album - nine songs! - weren’t just factory-generated; they were performed by almost entirely aggressive, attitudinal heavy machinery that was new for both Top 40 and the outer limits of mainstream R&B. That’s from the opening song, Control, which begins with a spoken proclamation of self-emancipation: This is a story about control.
Control (Janet Jackson album). Following its release, Control became Jackson's first album to top the Billboard 200 albums chart in the United States and five of its commercial singles-"What Have You Done for Me Lately", "Nasty", "Control", "When I Think of You", and "Let's Wait Awhile"-peaked within the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Lewis explained, "We got into her head. We saw what she was capable of, what she wanted to say, where she wanted to be, what she wanted to be. We put together some songs to fit her as we saw her, as she revealed herself to us.
1982 will forever be known as the year that the punks got class - or at least when Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello, rivals for the title of Britain's reigning Angry Young Man - decided that they were not just rockers, but really songwriters in the Tin Pan Alley tradition. Graham Parker, fellow angry Brit, sat this battle out, choosing to work with Aerosmith producer Jack Douglas instead.
Original album released in 1982. Recorded at Blue Rock Studio, Soho, New York City, Spring 1982.
