Description

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young perform "Helpless" at the Farm Aid concert in Bristow, Virginia on September 17, 2000.

Déjà Vu is the second album by trio Crosby, Stills & Nash, and their first as a quartet with Neil Young. It was released in March 1970 by Atlantic Records, catalogue SD 7200. It topped the pop album chart for one week and generated three Top 40 singles: "Woodstock", "Teach Your Children", and "Our House". It was re-released in 1977 as SD-19188 and the cover was changed from black to brown.

David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash formed a loose group in 1968 after the demise of their former bands. After their first album was released in May 1969 (simply called Crosby, Stills & Nash) Neil Young joined them, too. Though the quartet was incredibly successful, the musicians rather paid attention to their individual solo careers. Luckily the formation of CSN&Y made it to Woodstock, too. It was only their second gig and they were quite nervous on stage

Crosby, Stills & Nash (album). Crosby, Stills & Nash is the first album by Crosby, Stills & Nash, released in 1969 on the Atlantic Records label. The album itself peaked at on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart

By the time we got to Woodstock We were half a million strong And everywhere was a song And a celebration. And I dreamed I saw the bomber jet planes Riding shotgun in the sky Turning into butterflies Above our nation. We are stardust, we are golden We are caught in the devil's bargain And we got to get ourselves Back to the garden. This song is a cover of a Joni Mitchell song. She wrote it in response to Graham Nash’s description of the events there. Mitchell’s version is melodic and thoughtful, while the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young version focuses.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's performance at Woodstock was only their second show together. Before forming the band, Crosby had been a member of The Byrds, Nash was with The Hollies, Stills and Young were members of Buffalo Springfield. Neil Young played with the group for only part of the set. It may seem odd that the most famous song about Woodstock came from someone who wasn't there, but Mitchell had a different perspective. I was one of the many who were thwarted," she said on the CBC program The National .

Helpless" is a song written by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young, most famously recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young on their 1970 album Déjà Vu. The song was originally recorded with Young's band Crazy Horse in early 1969, before Young's new CSNY bandmates (he had joined the then-trio in mid-1969) convinced him it would suit them better. The song is deceptively simple; at its core is effectively the repetition of one melody over a descending D-A-G chord progression.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young onstage at Wembley Stadium, London, September 14, 1974. 10) Long Time Gone (1969). The title track of their second album – their first with Neil Young – opens in jazzy 4⁄4 time before moving into a dreamlike tempo befitting the lyrical content. Crosby delves into a past life, reflecting ‘I feel like I’ve been here before’. The song inspired them to appear in retro Civil War garb for the album’s cover shoot. 8) Teach Your Children (1970). Both Jefferson Airplane and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young performed the song in their respective sets at Woodstock Festival. Composed by Neil Young in pained reaction to the Kent State shootings of May 4, 1970, Ohio was rush-released as a single, scoring them a Billboard Top 20 hit. Its hard-hitting lyrical message was in sharp contrast to the peace-and-love vibes of the Woodstock era.
